Your Friendly Neighborhood

collectio

I've mentioned before on this site that I collect Spider-man stuff. People at the office know about my collection, but no one's ever seen it or realizes how big this collection is. Occasionally, I get asked about it: How big is it? How much space in your house does it take up? What does your wife say about it?

"Can I see it?"

I finally decided to take some pictures and do a post about it. First, some background.

It's an obsession that started by accident. I was in my mid-twenties, sharing an apartment with my buddy Dave. Both of us were avid comic collectors. We had a few comic character toys.

One night, we were vegging out on the couch watching TV when I happened to turn around and look at the mantle over the fireplace. My side of the fireplace had a handful of Spider-man toys and my friend's side had several Hulk toys.

"Check it out... all the toys on my side are red & blue and all the toys on your side are green & purple."

Me: "I think I'm gonna start collecting Spider-man toys."

Him: "I think I'm gonna start collecting Hulk toys."

And so we did. It bears mentioning that we embarked on our individual collections while completely lucid and sober; neither of us was high or drunk at the time.

Over the next 3 years, we each amassed an enormous collection of memorabilia. Eventually, Dave gave up the Hulk for Batman, but I stuck with Spidey. When the interesting Spidey stuff dried up, I switched to original comic art, which I continue to collect to this day. I've cut way back on the toys and knick-knacks though.

At any rate, here's some photos of my home office, or "the Spider-man Room". My nerdy hobbies are mostly kept contained within this room. Highlights include an original Steve Ditko page from 1964 and a Randy Bowen bronze statue.

There you have it. A small sampling of my collection. I'd say over half of it is still in boxes in my garage. Some of the weirder items in storage include a Spider-man bowling ball (undrilled, of course) and a Spidey costume, which actually fits. I tried it on when I got it, but have not worn it since, which really is for the best.

The All-New, All-Different

BLOG!

I get bored.

You may not look at this blog every day, but I do. See those links on the right? Well, I use those as my daily bookmarks. Consequently, my browser is pointed at this page all day. So I decided it was time for blog refresh.

So, down to two columns from three. Links cleaned up; dead one's disposed of, new one's added.

You may have also noticed that the link to the photoblog is gone too. I hadn't updated that site in almost two years so I figured any new shots could be posted here. I may start posting my notebook doodles too. They'd make nice filler methinks.

Who knows? Maybe this new look will motivate me to post more. Probably not, but maybe.

---------------------------------------

So if I'm not posting here, what the Hell have I been doing? Well, in addition to fatherhood stuff, just working my ass off.

Attik's been doing a lot of pitches and we're on somewhat of a roll. We haven't really lost one in three or four months.

The shop's undergone a lot of growth in the two years I've been there. A lot of projects from new clients, additional work from existing ones... including some Lexus work from Toyota.

Oddly enough, we even picked up some interactive work from one of my old clients, Taco Bell. Our interactive director cold-called them irrespective of my past experience on the brand. That experience came in handy and we won a nice assignment from them, beating the imcumbent (my former employer!).

We've doubled the size of the ad department since last summer. With advertising, design and interactivegroups collaborating nicely, it's a cool time to be working here. It feels like the model for the way agencies should be run.

Of course, its not perfect, but when I think about working for those huge agency networks, I get the shivers. They continue to run like dinosaurs on an outdated model. The future does not rest on the shoulders of a 30-second spot.
