Monday, July 26, 2010 : 11:00pm Better Late Than Never In my defense, I have been tweeting very regularly. Use the link above to follow me. At any rate, I'm back with a slew of Comic Con pictures from San Diego. Hit up a bunch of panels: the Expendables, Scott Pilgrim, Green Lantern, Let Me In, Paul, Harry Potter, Cowboys & Aliens, Captain America, Thor and the Avengers.
Sunday, April 4, 2010 : 6:22pm Flynn Lives Protest
The Flynn Lives website announced that the viral badge from a couple of posts ago would finally be put to use at a "secret" rally in San Francisco that would coincide with this year's WonderCon. Well, the organizers must've figured out that there wouldn't be enough badge holders in the city to participate because they began recruiting at the Con the day of the rally. First they was to be a pre-rally at the Hyatt Hotel next to Justin Herman Plaza beginning at 6:30pm. Fearing a massive crowd and feeling a little burnt out from WonderCon (a con post later), I headed over around 5pm. When I arrived there were already about 30 people gathered outside the big conference room. By 6:30, I'd estimate around 400 people.
After filling out a phony NDA, no doubt to be used to spam us with Tron marketing, we were let in. Everyone got Flynn Lives t-shirts and posters. We were told our mission was to disrupt an Encom press conference in the plaza outside at 8pm.
After a quick briefing, we went to the press conference in the freezing cold... this had better be worth it.
The plaza had a large, impressive Encom stage set up with fake security guys in suits and wireless headsets. Our Encom badges allowed us into a "VIP" section next to the stage. A PR flak introduced former Encom president Alan Bradley and they actually trotted out Bruce Boxleitner!
Then Boxleitner introduced his wife Lora. They actually got Cindy Morgan to show up. As far as I know, she's not actually in Tron Legacy, so that was a surprise. "Bradley" was introducing the online version of Space Paranoids, the game the world of Tron originated from.
Clearly there was some sort of technical difficulties because even with the teleprompters, Boxleitner stuttered and stalled for time. Eventually, he and Morgan were rushed off stage when the fake protest started. We were ostensibly there to demand that Encom invest money into searching for Kevin Flynn, who's been "missing" since 1989.
Then an Encom helicoptor buzzed the audience three times. It suddenly stopped overhead and hovered over the stage. We soon found out why. A skydiver jumped off the coptor.
For a few moments it seemed like he was headed right for us, but he settled in a roped off area, where he was whisked away via limo. After the event, I logged onto Flynn Lives to find out the skydiver was supposed to be Flynn's son, played by Garrett Hedlund. We later found out why Boxleitner was stalling. He was supposed to have been interrupted by the skydiver, which was delayed by high winds. That kinda screwed up the fake protest rally, but it was entertaining just the same. |
